“Nope, I thought it was her too when I first walked into the saloon but it was Dottie.” Kate said.

“Drinking?” Tilly asked

“Drunk.”

“You’re shitting me.” Tilly said stopping and turning to face Kate.

“Nope. She told me she fell off the wagon that her and Ray had been on.” Kate said.

“Oh, ok. I guess she is kind of entitled then. I just thought she had been an old bitch her whole life.” Tilly said.

“Well you would be wrong. Apparently she has lived quite the colorful life.”

“Well ain’t that some shit?” Tilly said.

“Yes, and …” Kate started to talk but the rustle of the chain link to her left stopped her.

“You hear that?” Tilly said. “This way. Come on.”

Tilly darted between the shacks and emerged in the open ground between the back of the shacks and the fence. In the moonlight she could see the shape against the fence. Kate came up beside her. Tilly raised her shotgun as they approached the thing against the fence.

“Hold on just a second there Annie Oakley.” Bridger said walking along the fence in the darkness to their right.

Tilly inadvertently swung the shotgun in his direction. He ducked.

“Hey, don’t shoot.” Bridger said still ducking but closing the distance between him and them remarkably fast.

He stepped to the side of Tilly bringing his hand up with him and lifted the shotgun right out of her hands. She was so surprised her hands hung empty in the air for another second.

“Hi Katie, how are you tonight?” Bridger said. He turned his attention back to Tilly and handed the shotgun back to her. “I don’t want you to shoot her. Sorry”

“Why not?” Tilly asked.

“Well for one, I don’t want the sound. And for another I want to watch her. I have been for almost an hour now.” Bridger said.

“It’s been at that fence for an hour?” Kate asked.

“Oh no. I saw her walking in the woods. It was just stumbling through the trees and all of a sudden stopped. It lifted its nose in the air and I could see it scenting like some kind of animal. It would sniff, look down, sniff again, look down, sniff again and the whole time slowly turning its body until it walked straight to where you see it now. She smelled us. The only thing that stopped her was that fence.” Bridger said.

“I wonder how many more are wandering out there.” Kate said.

“Well, we know this, if they get close enough to smell us we’ll know.” Tilly observed. “They’ll be gathered on this fence.”

“And since this is the only one I have seen tonight I don’t think there are a lot of them out there. At least not close by.” Bridger said. “But that could change if we fired off a shot. And like I said, I want to watch it for a while.”
